Step In

Step in when you see or hear partner abuse.
Recognizing when a fight is abusive can be difficult-everyone fights with their boyfriend right?  While every situation is different, there are specific indicators that abuse is going on.  If you hear or witness pushing, slapping, hair pulling or threats to hurt someone, it is obvious that there is abuse.  If you're not sure - go with your gut.  It may keep someone safe.  If you're comfortable you can approach the couple and try to defuse the situation in a non confrontational way.  For example - "Hey guys, I heard you arguing and wanted to make sure everything is okay."  You can also call your resident advisor to help.  If you think there is immediate danger, call the police.  Your concern can give the victim a way out and let the abuser know that people are watching.
